About

UoB WIM wanted to create a platform in which women can write about themselves from a health and professional perspective. This is a blog for women, about women, written by women.

Did you know that women have outnumbered men in medical schools for 25 years and yet women are STILL massively underrepresented and underpaid in most senior medical positions? The gender pay gap for doctors is 17% and in "male-dominated" specialties such as urology this gap is even higher. Currently there are nearly 32,000 male consultants to 18,000 females. The NHS's principles are built upon equality, and yet women employed by the NHS are still unequal.

Not only are women underrepresented professionally, but they are also often overlooked medically. Despite women being more likely to encounter health services, many specific health needs are not met. Between April and June 2020 there were 610 newly recorded FGM women and girls, and yet identifying FGM is not taught at most medical schools. Women are more likely to die than men when CPR is required. Women are more likely to have pain dismissed than men. Black women are five times more likely to die in childbirth than white women. It is becoming increasingly obvious that women are being mistreated due to gender and ethnic bias. The gender health gap is currently the largest in any G20 country.

UoB WIM want to be part of the movement to curb gender inequality both professionally and medically. Women deserve to be taken seriously, their medical needs met, and their professional accomplishments recognised. Follow this blog to read stories, reviews, articles and more from women who want to use their voice to continue battling inequality.
